When cross country was started out, coaches would set up their courses with a starting line and finish line and what ever the distance was...great. It does not really matter since comparing times to different courses is not practical. 2.84 is the best they can do at East End. This course has been around since 1960. To run an extra circuit would move the course up to 3.3. I think we get too hung up on lists of times during the xc season.

TV shows us the average fan of sports can't watch anything over 1mile. I hate tv since the distance races are always cut away from my feeling is show the whole race if the attention span of the average fan can't take that then I don't care for the average fan. Learn to appreciate the sport, you only see endurance sports get cut away from in the middle of the event.

Thanks for the reasoning Mike. I've been around enough to know times are only part of the story. I do like to see efforts recognized in the various databases and to be able to judge efforts over a span of time. I'm all for the nostalgia, to an extent, of keeping the course the same, especially seeing space is limited at East End Park. Seeing Ryan went 13:50 yesterday and is a 4:11/9.07 type runner on the track, I would really like to see how his time at East End compares to others over the years, especially seeing it's a course that hasn't changed from 2.84 in decades. Put me in the camp of liking courses that don't change, my results in hytek format and not being a big fan of the 1500/3000 :)

With that said, I think there is something to be said for growing the sport to the average fan by having standard distances.

Amen, Mike.

Seems like some States like to run distances other than a 5K like this 2.84 miler. Any specific reason why?
