Girls 3A Sectional Recap
#1 Schaumburg Sectional- #1 Mt. Prospect (Prospect)- 2nd: 91 points; advance to IHSA State Championship on 11/7. #2 Palatine- 1st: 57 pts; advance to IHSA State Championship on 11/7. #3 Schaumburg- 3rd: 105 pts; advance to IHSA State Championship on 11/7. #6 Hoffman Estates- 5th: 151 pts; advance to IHSA State Championship on 11/7. #16 Libertyville- 9th: 221 pts; SEASON OVER #17 Rolling Meadows- 8th: 193 pts; SEASON OVER #18 Barrington- 7th: 189 pts; SEASON OVER #21 Arlington Heights (Hersey)- 4th: 150 pts; advance to IHSA State Championship on 11/7. #25 Palatine (Fremd)- 9th: 221 pts: SEASON OVER. Buffalo Grove- 11th: 283 pts; SEASON OVER. Quick recap: it wasn't really an upset for Palatine in their victory over Prospect. The Pirates were ranked #1 two weeks ago before the Knights upended them in the MSL championship. But what is significant in this affair is how well Palatine conducted themselves on the field. First, Sarah McIntosh is hot again. She won convincingly for the second straight week. Her team ran well too. The varsity seven averaged 18:48 on a mud-slopped course... Most of Prospect’s team suffered from the flu during the week but coach Dave Wurster didn’t make any excuses for not winning the team title. “Our team struggled, but we’re very happy that we still finished 2nd,” said Wurster... Hoffman Estate’s Melissa Schmidt returned to the starting lineup after being out with an ankle injury. She placed 38th overall and her team earned another trip to the state championship... Schaumburg’s trio of Britten Petrey, Colette Falsey, and Karen Lesiewicz placed 2nd, 5th, & 9th in nabbing third place as a team... Hersey finished 7th in the MSL championship but that’s a little deceiving. The MSL happens to be the deepest conference in the state if not the country for girls cross country. Plus, Ashley Martin was absent for much of the season until recently. She ran marvelously and placed 3rd overall and her team placed 4th. Buffalo Grove missed out on another trip to the state finals but sophomore ace Olivia Jones moved on after placing 6th... Barrington couldn't quite recover in time from the flu that ravaged the team nearly two weeks ago... Rebecca Batliner was able to rite her season by finishing 7th. She will compete as an individual in Peoria... Rolling Meadows had a superb season but will not be advancing on to Peoria, but Christina Gastfield will. She will make her second straight appearance in the state final.
#2 St. Charles East Sectional- #7 Wheaton-Warrenville South- 1st: 66 pts; advance to IHSA State Championship on 11/7. #8 Geneva- 3rd: 79 pts; advance to IHSA State championship on 11/7. #10 Naperville North- 2nd: 69 pts; advance to IHSA State championship on 11/7. #12 Lisle (Benet Academy)- 8th: 233 pts; SEASON OVER. #15 Naperville Central- 6th: 223 pts; SEASON OVER. #19 St. Charles East- 4th: 130 pts; advance to IHSA State Championship on 11/7. #22 St. Charles North- 7th: 224 pts; SEASON OVER. Huntley- 12th: 307 pts; SEASON OVER. Glen Ellyn (Glenbard West)- 9th: 291 pts; SEASON OVER. Crystal Lake South- 13th: 352 pts; SEASON OVER. Quick recap: three times is a charm for Wheaton-Warrenville South as the Tigers defeated newfound rival Naperville North for the third straight time. WWS used the 1-2 punch of Lauren Mordini and surprising Claire Kelly to earn a hard fought three-point victory... Naperville North held back a previously resurgent Geneva team that had won the last two sectionals. Emily Smith placed second overall to lead the Huskies... Geneva placed third but just 10 pts in back of first place. The Vikings ran a tight 1-4 split of 47 seconds... St. Charles East and a total surprise from Bartlett complete the state field. The Saints advance to state again after losing a ton of talent from last year. Sophmore Mallory Abel, a holdover from ’08, placed 6th. As for Bartlett, the Hawks did not have the usual stellar performance from Alyssa Schneider instead it was more of a team effort... Naperville Central and Benet Academy were teams ranked very high all season, but fell short of their goal of advancing to Peoria. But as a consolation prize Amanda Fox (Naperville Central), McKinzie Schulz and Jenny Bohac (Benet Academy) move on to state... Meghan Heuer will return to Peoria again but via an individual for St. Charles North after her third place finish. Heuer, a former transplant from Minnesota, ran for two-time defending state champion Geneva squad last year. Heuer transferred to St. Charles North during the summer.
#3 Lockport Sectional- #5 Orland Park (Sandburg)- 1st: 51 pts; advance to IHSA State Championship on 11/7. #9 LaGrange (Lyons Twp)- 5th: 108 pts; advance to IHSA State Championship on 11/7. #11 Downers Grove North- 2nd: 73 pts; advance to IHSA State Championship on 11/7. #13 Hinsdale Central- 3rd: 73 pts; advance to IHSA State Championship on 11/7. #23 Lockport- 4th: 108 pts; advance to IHSA State Championship on 11/7. #25 Downers Grove South- 6th: 173 pts; SEASON OVER. Darien (Hinsdale South)- 9th: 254 pts; SEASON OVER. Chicago (Marist)- 8th: 224 pts; SEASON OVER. Chicago (Mother McAuley)- 10th: 277 pts; SEASON OVER. Naperville (Neuqua Valley)- 7th: 198 pts; SEASON OVER. Quick recap: four spots among the top 11 was all it took for Sandburg to call it curtains on the competition. Even if Kim Christensen didn’t run (she won) the Eagles still win over runner-up Downers Grove North by a substantial margin. It’s now on to the state championship with a match up against the mighty MSL and York. Hinsdale Central tied DGN but was given third on the 6th place tie breaker. Lyons took the final berth state from Downers Grove South.
#4 Skokie (Niles West) Sectional- #4 Elmhurst (York)- 1st: 38 pts; advance to IHSA State Championship on 11/7. #14 Chicago Whitney Young- 2nd: 89 pts; advance to IHSA State Championship on 11/7. #20 Winnetka (New Trier)- 3rd: 106 pts; advance to IHSA State Championship on 11/7. #24 Roselle (Lake Park)- 6th: 194 pts; SEASON OVER. Park Ridge (Maine South)- 7th: 196 pts: SEASON OVER. Wilmette (Loyola Academy)- 5th: 183 pts; advance to IHSA State Championship on 11/7. Lombard (Glenbard East)- 11th: 236 pts; SEASON OVER. Skokie (Niles West)- 4th: 172 pts; advance to IHSA State Championship on 11/7. Chicago (St. Ignatius)- 10th: 231 pts; SEASON OVER. Oak Park-River Forest- 8th: 203 pts; SEASON OVER. Quick recap: York came in as the heavy favorite and that fact was not misunderstood. The Dukettes put a several hurting on second place Whitney Young by placing four runners in front of their second finisher. York’s seventh runner placed 14th compared to the Dolphin’s third runner Rachel Joravsky in 18th... State bound newbies New Trier and Niles West placed 3rd and 4th respectively... Loyola Academy has a history of big late season finishes. The Ramblers continued that tradition by finishing 5th and earning the last spot to Peoria.
#5 Normal West Sectional- Frankfort (Lincoln-Way East)- 1st: 111 pts; advance to IHSA State Championship on 11/7. Tinley Park (Andrew)- 4th: 143 pts; advance to IHSA State Championship on 11/7. Minooka- 5th: 169 pts; advance to IHSA State Championship on 11/7. Belleville West- 14TH: 371 pts; SEASON OVER. Edwardsville- 6th: 184 pts; SEASON OVER. Frankfort (Lincoln-Way North)- 11th: 284 pts; SEASON OVER. New Lenox (Lincoln-Way Central)- 9th: 225 pts; SEASON OVER. Quick recap: the focus was on host Normal West and Normal because of the history of their rivalry as well as the star power involved. Actually, the two favorites were Lincoln-Way East and O’Fallon stole the show. LWE won by a single point... Normal West returned to state with a third place finish.... Normal Community missed on advancing as a team but two runners in Marie O’Leary and Carly Pederson placed first and second. They will be candidates to place very high next weekend at state. Another budding star Haley Verbeke of Moline placed third. |
